Basic legal information

Legal form

Student unions are institutions governed by public law which manage their matters by the Statute. They have a manager who runs the business and acts as representative of the union. Alongside this, there is a governing board which commissions, advises and supervises the manager. There is also a shareholders' meeting which elects the members of the governing board.

Tasks

In cooperation with the higher education institutes and state academies, insofar as these have an affiliation with the student unions, the student unions in Baden-Wuerttemberg are responsible for the social care and development of students.

The following areas, facilities and measures of the student unions are related in particular to this aim:

  • University catering
  • Student accommodation
  • Promotion of cultural, sport and social interests
  • Childcare
  • Advice and counselling
  • Social care for international students
  • Allocation of financial help for study

People who are not students of an assigned higher education institute or state academic can obtain permission to use this provision, provided this is compatible with the fulfilment of the tasks taken on by the student unions.

Student unions pursue directly and exclusively common aims in the sense of the paragraph 'tax-advantaged purposes' of the German fiscal system.
